GH5188 (GH188) Cobalt-based superalloy overview

The alloy has excellent high-temperature thermal strength, and the addition of higher content of chromium and trace lanthanum makes the alloy have good high-temperature oxidation resistance, and at the same time has satisfactory forming, welding and other technological properties.

GH5188 (GH188) cobalt-based superalloy is easy to process

188 alloy has good forming and processing characteristics. It can be forged or hot worked. Thermal processing requires the workpiece to be kept warm at 1175 ° C for a sufficient period of time to ensure that the entire workpiece reaches this temperature. Because the material is very ductile, alloy 188 can be cold worked. Because the alloy has the characteristics of rapid cold-work hardening, it requires multiple inter-process annealing treatments when processing complex parts. Both hot-worked and cold-worked parts need to be annealed and cooled quickly to restore the material's performance.

The material has good limited welding characteristics and can be welded by hand or by automatic welding methods, including TIG, MIG, electron beam welding, and resistance welding.

GH5188 (GH188) cobalt-based superalloy heat treatment

The forged 188 alloy is usually supplied in a solid solution state. The conventional heat treatment method is 1175 ° C +/- 14 ° C solution treatment and then rapid cooling or water quenching to achieve the best performance. Annealing at a temperature below the solution temperature will produce some carbide precipitation, which will affect the performance of 188 alloy.

GH5188 (GH188) cobalt-based superalloys in various delivery shapes

188 alloys are available in thick plates, thin plates, strips, blocks, bars, wires, tubes

GH5188 (GH188) cobalt-based superalloy applications

GH5188 cobalt-based deformed superalloy is suitable for the manufacture of parts on aircraft engines requiring high strength below 980 ℃ and oxidation resistance below 1100 ℃. It can also be used on space engines and space shuttles.

 

GH5188 (GH188) Cobalt-based superalloy welding

188 alloy is suitable for a variety of welding methods, including TIG, MIG, arc welding (film electrode), electron beam welding and resistance welding. The welding performance of 188 alloy is similar to that of 25 alloy. Submerged arc welding is not recommended.

1. Preparation of base metal

Before welding, thoroughly clean the welding surface and the adjacent surface. Oil stains, chalk marks, sulfur-containing compounds and other foreign objects must be completely removed. Do not touch copper or copper-containing materials in the welding area. The material is preferably in the solution annealed state during welding, but it is not necessarily in this state.

2. Choose solder

It is recommended to use solder with matching composition. When the thickness of the weld profile is greater than 9.5mm, 230-WTM solder is recommended. It is recommended to use 25 alloy electrode (AMS5796) for film metal arc welding. Welding of dissimilar metals, such as 188 alloy and nickel-based alloy, cobalt-based alloy, iron-based alloy welding, available 188 alloy, 230-W wire, 556TM alloy, Hastelloy S alloy (AMS5838) or Hastelloy W alloy (AMS5786 , 5787) as solder for soldering products.

3. Preheating, interlayer temperature and post-weld heat treatment

If the welding temperature of the base metal is higher than 0 ° C, generally no preheating is required. The temperature between layers is usually low. If necessary, an auxiliary cooling method can be used between the weld passes, but the cooling process cannot bring in pollutants. 188 alloy does not require post-weld heat treatment.
